It's not VW tech, but I'm thinking of getting involved with rotary engine in my next project car (which will not be coming into play anytime soon). I was thinking I might end up with a RX-7, but my what I'm really thinking of is swapping a rotary into a 2 door E30. What I'm wondering is does anybody know how much it costs to own and maintain a rotary engine? I know nothing about the costs or procedures to rebuild one, just that I should expect to rebuild it on a somewhat regular interval. Having someone other than myself do the work is out of the question, so I would need to obtain whatever special tools are required to do the work. I'm just wondering how realisic this is. Any advice would be great.

youre right about them needing to be serviced at quite regular intervals.... many people dont do this, that is why people that dont take care or something like that, shoudnt own cars. i think its supposed to be mildly rebuilt every 60k maybe more? not too sure. im in the dark on this one too mike.

A comon problem on these motors is the Vice Grip on the back of the motors. They tend to come loose at high RPM and cause major damage.

Not really any tourque there , they are only good for putting in a mg or a sprite. Maybe a triumph. E30 chassis cars are heavy. They need to be rebuilt about every thirty for optimum performance though.
