I'm planning on mounting the battery in my Jetta in the rear passenger footwell, and using a optima red top or something like this. I'm wanting to have the configuration comply with racing regulations, SCCA and perhaps otherwise. I'm wondering what the rules are about having to have the battery in the box even if it's a sealed dry cell or gel cell, and how safe it is for me to not have it in a box. That and the position of it in the car are my biggest concerns, but anything I should know about would be great. -Mike

Just get a marine battery box and securely mount it.

scca has no rules about it other than being securely mounted. But nhra is a different story. They want a sealed box, (moroso) makes it. Even if it's a dry cell.

I don't know about the SCCA but the NHRA also requires a externally mounted battery shutoff if the battery is not under the hood.

Thanks for the info guys. I was especially looking for your advice Tom, thanks. I ordered a Hawker Odyssey PC625 today. Once I get that, I can make a nice bracket for it and get on with the show.
